Narrative Writing

Today for writing we made six sentence stories. It was laid out with each sentence a different theme to the others. This was a really fun activity to do, it was fun because it was a creative way to write. It was laid out like this:
1.Who the main character is, 2.This is where they live, 3.What they are talented at, 4.Was the problem, 5.Why there was a problem and was 6.The solution.
Here is mine:

1
Once upon a time there was a sad lonely dragon called Jeff.
2
He lived in a lonely cave with a very depressing atmosphere.
3
But he could play a trombone very passionately his music was like a chocolate brownie, satisfying.
4
He wanted to make friends but everytime he approached someone then they would scream DRAGON!!! and run.
5
He was a sad dragon because all other dragons are evil but he was not.
6
One day a kingdom was being attacked by a purple dragon then Jeff came along and defeated it,now he is the most popular person in the kingdom, now he is the happiest dragon alive….The End

Maths, Reading & Visualisation

In reading we have been working on our comprehension strategies.  Last week we focused on visualisation - they way we can create mental images when we read to deepen our understanding of the text.  We read a short passage that explained how to measure a very tall object without having to climb it and we visualised how we would do this.

Yesterday we went out and put this knowledge into practice. We used a method which involved lining the tip and bottom of the pencil with the tip and bottom of the object we are measuring, then we turned the pencil on its side and our partners (who were standing at the base of the object) moved to the edge of the pencil, then we measured the distance from him/her to the pole.Dewald and I did this with the rugby posts and the size of them were 6.5 metres(according to the method).

Pressures on the Earth

Yesterday we did a quiz on sustainability and how sustainable we are...
The reason mine popped because I was okay but the breaths of air I blew in were too large and the air release was too little. If we had an unsustainable answer we added a breath (mine were too big) if we had a sustainable answer we get rid of a breath (mine were too little). We had questions like do you wrap your food in glad wrap? The point of this was to realize that we need to work on our sustainability(or not). It was really fun! :-)

'The Giver '- Reflection

What is the value of memory in The Giver? Why does the community need it preserved?

The Giver provides wisdom to the elders for consideration of changes through memory's of things in the past.Without him/her the community would have no wisdom. The community needs memories held in only one person, because they think that there will be chaos and confusion within the community without a Giver.

Persuasive Writing

The School Day Should Not End At Five

Breaking news: Last night John Key, Prime Minister of New Zealand, has announced that the intermediate school day will end at five at night, yes FIVE AT NIGHT! I think that this is a bit over the top...but here is reporter Dewald Botha on the scene…

Hi, Dewald here I am currently interviewing kids who are against this (cough) disappointing event, first I am interviewing a young boy called Leo Wiltshire, Leo.Thanks Dewald I find this bad because when will people have time for sports?
You can't just come out of school for sports, so you will end up not getting enough exercise turning you into a fat lazy slob whether you like it or not. When will you cheer your brothers and / or sisters on, you wont have time, why because you will be at school, then they will fall behind because of their lack of confidence.

Okay that was a good answer now lets move on to William Tidswell, Will. Thanks Dewald, what about homework. When will you get time for it when you will come home and have dinner and stuff like that all night, then you will be tired and you won't be able to get up in the morning, making you late then getting detention, will you do homework at school but it is HOMEwork.

Here is my Mum on the scene right now, Mum. I think it is bad because when will I see my eldest son Harry, all he will be doing is eating, doing homework and he will be at school. Does John Key want him to miss all his clubs and sports? We will not be able to help him because he will know everything that we try to teach him.

(That was the people who dislike the idea)
Okay here is the other half of the story with people who have a different perspective on things…

Miss Kay.Thanks Dewald, I think it is a good because I love seeing the kids, it brings joy to my day, for all I care the school day can end at 2:00am, I cannot wait for tomorrow.:) She sure likes school kids now on to the last positive review, Mrs Hyundai. I like how school ends late now because my son is getting smarter and I have some ME time I love you John Key! WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO I AM ON TV, SHOUT OUT TO J..

Sorry folks (cough) technical difficulties. (These were the people who like the idea)

Okay now here is my conclusion to this story: Do you think this healthy for kids to barely see their family,or do exercise? I certainly don’t, I love to bike so when will people be able to bike and or scooter to school, this lack of exercise cannot be good for people. But hey that is just my opinion. So I hope you send in your thoughts for Seven Sharp, which is next on TV One…

Technology: Rotation Four

On Friday for Tech we made simple circuits and learnt how they work. They work by power from the battery traveling around the circuit. There are two types of circuits, the series circuit, which goes around and if one piece is disconnected the the whole circuit stops and a parallel circuit which means if one is disconnected the circuit keeps going. We have parallel circuits in our houses, here is a diagram:

Here is a photo of my group in action:

Last term Room 12B made Picasso inspired art, they are all unique and different here is mine:

My Inquiry Reflection

Last term room 12B were learning about the human machine here is a short reflection about what I have learnt:

What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease that affects the pancreas, a part of the stomach that produces a chemical called Insulin, which controls a chemical called glucose which is how much sugar is in your blood so if there is too much in your blood, it will clot then you will die.
Diabetes vary in the types. Type one is what you get when you are a child and the pancreas instantly stops working and you cannot cure it. Type 2 is what you get when you are an adult by eating too much junk and your pancreas eventually stops working, while Type 3 diabetes is when you are pregnant and your brain is resistant to insulin.
Diabetes also affects the heart with heartburn and or other things you get from eating too much sugar. Approximately 11,000 people in New Zealand have Type 1 Diabetes.Approximately 105,000 people in New Zealand are known to have Type 2 Diabetes and it is estimated that nearly the same number have undiagnosed Type 2 Diabetes.

Explanation Writing: The Circulatory System

This term room 12B have been working on the human body,we did explanation writing so here is mine:
Circulatory System

Did you know that your heart is a muscle?,Did you know that it pumps your blood around your body?,Did you know your Circulatory System is including the muscles, veins and more,Did you know that there are 4 parts that make up your blood? Well lets look at that now…red and white blood cells are produced by your bones, but that is another article, this article is explaining how it works so without further ado it begins!

What is your circulatory system?
The circulatory system is your blood system including your heart, arteries veins and your blood.Basically it pumps blood through your body.Your blood is made up of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma.red blood cells is the part which carries the oxygen around, white blood cells fight infections,Platelets are Cells that help you stop bleeding when you get a cut or graze, plasma carries nutrients hormones and proteins through the body.

What is your Heart?
Your heart is actually a muscle that pumps blood around your body, there are two different parts of the heart, one pumps the blood to your lungs and the other part pumps blood from your heart.Your heart is not actually a love heart shape its more of a Peary kind of shape here is a picture from the Kids Health website:2014-06-11_14-07-24.jpg,any way that's not the point, the point is that the heart is a very important origin, you have heard of people dying of heart attacks the way they get them is being old or eating badly.Anyway the heart is as big as your clenched fist yet it pumps blood around the whole body, which is pretty amazing!

How does it work?
Basically blood is produced inside your bones then it “hitchhikes” the other blood into the heart and then the heart  pumps it into the lungs, then the blood picks up the oxygen,it also comes back into the heart, why you ask?,because then the blood moves it to the origins which require the oxygen and food including the brain.

Why do we have a circulatory system?
We have the circulatory system because we need the nutrients from what we eat and produce all around our body to spread to other organs like the brain for example, if we did not have this system we would die when we were very young unless  you get hooked up to a machine. You don’t want to be hooked up to a machine all your life.

So now I hope you have learnt a thing or two about the circulatory system and how it works,if you need any more information I have a link to Kids Health HERE,

Ode To A Tongue

This week Room 12B made ode poems about the human body I choose the tongue so I hope you like it!!!!

Tongue, Tongue
Where would I be
You know that I like KFC
Not so much broccoli
Not so much mushrooms
But good ol’ crackers and cheese
Also,it drives my crazy when i bite on it
It hurts like a little critter
But now lets stop being so bitter
And get a knitter
And knit a scarf for the poor critter…
As sometimes it can be as cold
As an old
Pole.
